When you thinking about moving, there is so many things need to do! Please plan your move earlier. The checklist here is provided to help make your move as smooth as possible.

Eight Weeks Before
  1. Get in touch with a moving company and set a date for the move. Fill out any necessary paperwork, and be sure to get moving insurance if you need it. Try to shop around as much as possible to get the best rate.
  2. If you are self move and need to rent a truck. Be sure to reserve it well in advance since reservations fill up quickly at certain times of the year.
  3. Remove items from your storage shed, basement, etc.
  4. Start to use up things you can't move, such as frozen foods and cleaning supplies.
  5. Contact the Camber of Commerce or visitors and tourism bureaus in your new community for information on your new city.

Six Weeks Before
  1. If you're moving at an employer's request, verify what expenses and responsibilities are theirs and which are yours.
  2. Contact your accountant for information on what moving expenses may be tax-deductible.
  3. Begin to inventory and evaluate your possessions. What can be sole or donated?
  4. Hold a garage sale before you pack.
  5. Obtain a mail subscription to the local paper in your new community to familiarize yourself with local government, community, and social news and activities.
  6. Locate all auto licensing and registration documents.
  7. Contact school, doctors, dentists, lawyers and accountants and obtain copies of your personal records. Ask for referrals where possible.

Four Weeks Before
  1. Fill out an official change-of-address kit.
  2. Notify all important business and personal contacts of your new address. Fill out changes of address for creditors and magazine subscriptions.
  3. Arrange special transport for your pets and plants.
    Contact utility and related companies for service disconnect/connect at your old and new addresses. However, remember to keep phone and utilities connected at your current home throughout moving day.
  4. Contact insurance companies (auto, homeowner's or renters, medical, and life) to arrange for coverage in your new home.
  5. If you're packing yourself, buy boxes and packing the items that you won't be needing in the next month. Choose a room of the house to serve as a temporary storage area for packed boxes.

Three Weeks Before
  1. Make travel arrangements and reservations for your moving trip. However, don't make plane reservation for the same day that you're moving out. House closings are often delayed. and other unexpected situations often arise.
  2. Collect important papers (insurance, will, deed, stock, etc.).
  3. Arrange to close accounts in your local bank and open accounts in your new local.

Two Weeks Before
  1. Have your car checked and serviced for the trip. Also, make sure that your automobile is prepared (filled with the necessary antifreeze/coolant, for example) for the type of weather conditions you'll be traveling in.
  2. If you're moving out or into a highrise apartment, be sure to reserve an elevator for the day of your move.
  3. Contact your moving consultant to review and conform all arrangements for your move.

One Weeks Before
  1. Settle any outstanding bills with local merchants.
  2. Don't forget to withdraw the contents of your safety deposit box, pick up any dry cleaning, return library books and rented videotapes, etc.
  3. Take pets to veterinarian for any needed immunizations. Get copies of pets' records.
  4. Drain gas from any gas powered equipment before you pack it up. Try to make disposal arrangements for any oil, gas, or other hazardous substances you will not be able to move, use, or throw away.
  5. Give away plants not being moved.
  6. Prepare specific directions to your new home for your moving company. (Include your itinerary, emergency numbers, etc.).
  7. Confirm any travel plans or reservations you may have made for moving day (flights, hotel, rental cars, etc).

Two to Three Days Before
  1. Begin cleaning your house. Make sure you defrost your freezer and refrigerator.
  2. Have your major appliances disconnected and prepared for the move. (Again, your moving consultant can help with arrangements for a third party to provide these services.).
  3. Pack a box of personal items that will be needed immediately at your new home. Have this box loaded last or carry it with you in your car.
  4. Organize and set aside those things that you're taking with you so that they don't get loaded on the van in error.
  5. Contact your moving consultant to confirm arrival time of the moving van, as well as to notify him/her of any last minute details.
  6. Do a final walk-through of your old residence, checking closets, drawers, etc.
  7. If you're self move, Pick up your rental truck and any moving equipment you may need (dollies, carts, furniture pads, etc…)
Moving Day
  1. Turn off all lights, lock all doors and windows, and leave keys with your old property manager if applicable.
  2. Your van operator and crew arrive at the agreed upon time. Make sure is at home for any enquiries the van operator may have with respect to your shipment.
  3. Record all utility meter reading (gas, electric, water).
  4. Read your bill of lading and inventory carefully before your sign them. Keep these - and all related papers - in a safe location until all charges have been paid and all claims, if any, have been settled.
